Google SGE

Google SGE stands for Search Generative Experience and describes Google’s first attempt to integrate generative artificial intelligence directly into the search results page. The Search Generative Experience was presented in May 2023 at the Google I/O developer conference and then rolled out as an experiment via Google Search Labs. The core element was an AI-generated answer that appeared above the classic ten blue links and condensed several sources into a coherent overview. In May 2024, Google ended the experiment and integrated the feature into regular search under the name AI Overviews. The term Google SGE is still used in the SEO industry – mostly as a collective term for the AI answers in Google Search and the related changes.
How the Search Generative Experience worked
For suitable search queries, SGE generated a so-called AI Snapshot: a summary of a few paragraphs that directly answered the user’s question. To the right of it or below it, the sources from which the answer had been compiled were displayed as cards. Below the snapshot, Google suggested follow-up questions that allowed the topic to be explored in more depth in a dialog – a conversational mode that anticipated the later development of Gemini and AI Mode. For commercial search queries, SGE also displayed product overviews with prices, ratings and merchants, powered by the Google Shopping Graph.
Technically, SGE was based on Google’s language models PaLM 2 and later Gemini. The answers were not freely invented but generated from documents in the Google index: Google determined the relevant pages, extracted suitable passages and had a summary formulated from them. This architecture is still the basis of AI Overviews today – and the reason why classic search engine optimization continues to be the foundation of any visibility in AI answers.
From the SGE update to AI Overviews and AI Mode
The transition from SGE to AI Overviews in May 2024 is often referred to in the industry as the SGE update. With this step, generative search left the lab and was rolled out to all users, first in the USA and then gradually in other countries. In Germany, AI Overviews have been visible since spring 2025. Compared with the experiment, Google has made the answers shorter, placed the source references more prominently and reduced the share of search queries with AI answers – especially for sensitive topics such as health or finance.
2025 was followed by the next stage with AI Mode: a dedicated tab in Google Search in which the results list is completely replaced by a chat dialog. What began as an experiment with SGE has thus become a permanent part of search.
Impact on search engine optimization
Google SGE SEO dealt from the outset with a central question: what happens to organic traffic when Google provides the answer itself? Studies since the introduction of AI Overviews show significantly declining click-through rates on the classic results for information-oriented search queries. At the same time, a new form of visibility has emerged: pages that are cited as a source in the AI answer are given a prominent position – even if they do not rank in the top positions in the classic results list.
Three principles therefore apply to SEO for Google SGE and its successors. First, technical and content-based basic optimization remains a prerequisite, because Google generates the AI answers from the regular index. Second, not pages but passages are selected – content should answer questions concisely and completely in a clearly identifiable place. Third, trust signals are gaining importance: Google prefers sources with demonstrable experience and expertise (E-E-A-T), consistent information about authors and companies, and mentions on third-party sites.
Significance for online shops
For e-commerce, SGE was a harbinger of what has become everyday reality with AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google answers purchase advisory questions itself and displays suitable products directly in the AI answer. The basis for this is the data from the Google Merchant Center and the Shopping Graph. Shops that provide complete product attributes, up-to-date prices and availability, and equip their category pages with advisory content have significantly better chances of appearing in these overviews.
